About the Workshop

The Mechanical Workshop provides support for a wide range of research projects within the Department of Oncology. It provides a ‘one stop shop’ and services include consultation, Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings, material sourcing and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining. We undertake and complete approximately 350 jobs per year….almost one a day!  These range from individual prototypes to complex assemblies of many hundreds of components.

The Mechanical Workshop is staffed by two highly trained technical support staff: Mr John Prentice and Mr Gerry Shortland and they provide technical support for research projects within the Department of Oncology. Our first Apprentice Mechanical Engineering Technician, Mr Kyle Hallett, joined the team in 2015. This is the Department’s first apprenticeship, aimed at ensuring continuity in workshop expertise.
