Angled α-particle irradiation jig

Within the Department of Oncology's Radiation Biophysics Core there is a unique plutonium alpha particle irradiator that is used to investigate DNA damage and cellular responses to high LET radiation. In collaboration with the Radiation Biophysics Core, the workshop has produced a bespoke jig to irradiate cell dishes at an acute (70 degree) angle.

The primary design challenge was to fit the device within the limited space above the existing irradiator. The internal volume is also sealed so that it can be flushed with helium to extend the range of the alpha particles. A spring loaded dynamic seal allows the sample dish to mechanically traverse the aperture, creating a uniform dose distribution over the target area.

All components were produced within the Mechanical Workshop, apart from the motor, lead screw and linear bearings around which the device was designed. The aluminium parts were anodised to improve corrosion and wear resistance of the parts.
