Hand warmer

We developed a hand warmer heating system for obtaining arterialised venous blood to derive arterial input function in functional imaging studies. This was a special one-off system for running a Phase I clinical trial.

The project was initiated by Dr Geoff Higgins as part of an imaging study. Dr Iain Tullis designed the mechanics and Professor Boris Vojnovic designed the electronics and control system.

John Prentice and Gerry Shortland machined all the components and Rob Newman performed electrical construction. With thanks to Daniel McGowan for help with safety testing and assistance with approvals for clinical use.

The financial support of Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is gratefully acknowledged.
