Warneford Park - Invite to Second Phase of Consultation
 
A second phase of the pre-planning application public consultation events for Warneford Park are taking place in December. Oxford Health Foundation Trust, University of Oxford and a partner want to develop a major brain health research and innovation campus on the Warneford site. This will comprise:
  • a new mental health hospital, offering the best treatment, care, and therapeutic environment.  
  • a modern scientific facility for the world-leading brain research taking place at the University of Oxford, with additional space for biotech, pharmaceutical and start-up companies.
  • a new post-graduate college for the University of Oxford focused on medical sciences, bio-engineering and related disciplines.
Staff are welcome to any of the exhibition events on the following dates and times at the Day Centre, main entrance of the Warneford Hospital OX3 7JX.
  • Monday 2 December from 10am – 2pm (staff only preview session)
  • Thursday 5 December from 4-7pm (public)
  • Friday 6 December from 1-6pm (public)
  • Saturday 7 December from 10-1pm (public)

New Starter Lab Tour
 
We give an enormous thanks to Ester Hammond and members of her lab, Sophie Twigger, Katja Worth, and Eduard Petrosyan, for delivering the New Starter Lab Tour on Tuesday, 19th November. New department colleagues in Professional Support roles enjoyed a presentation about some of the exciting research happening in the department and a tour of some of the labs to get a closer look at the action, including peeking through a microscope and getting to grips with a hypoxia chamber. A fantastic morning!

Call for Final Honour School Research Projects
 
The Course Director for Pre-clinical Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is seeking expressions of interest in offering a research project to candidates of the Final Honour Schools of Medical Sciences, Cell & Systems Biology and Neuroscience. Typically research projects begin in May and data gathering and/or data analysis should occupy the student for a total of approximately 8 full weeks, or an equivalent period (e.g. 16 half-time weeks).

For each student supervised, the supervisor’s department will be allocated a proportion of the T-JRAM associated with Year 2 of the student’s course (usually a figure of c.£2000). Supervisors will also be able to claim for the equivalent of 8 hours of tutorial teaching (£254.08 for 2024-25) from the student’s college.

Deadline: please complete the online form by Monday 17 January 2025 (0th week, Hilary Term).

Essentials of Light Microscopy Course
 
The Oxford Light Microscopy Imaging Facilities invite you to take part in the Essentials of Light Microscopy short course. It is suitable for all students, technicians, postdocs and other staff who require microscopy as part of their project/work and does not require any previous microscopy experience.

The course is aimed to provide a basic theoretical background for the everyday microscopy demands in Oxford's biomedical research institutes and connect you with imaging facilities near you.

We will finish the day by going to at White Hart pub, to continue discussions and get to know each other.

Dr Fernandes leads a group focused on Immune signalling in health and disease at the CAMS Oxford Institute, coming from Stanford where he developed novel molecules to effectively shut down signalling by immune receptors such as PD-1.

'Your next career step’ is a new online event designed to support researchers who are mid-contract to help them prepare for their next career steps (at Oxford, within academia or beyond).

The event is intended for researchers who are near the mid-point of a fixed-term or open-ended externally funded contract, however those at any stage of their contract are welcome.

Athena Swan Termly Community-Building Session
 
Join members of the Athena Swan Working Group for a virtual learning and community networking session on Athena Swan. This will be the first in a termly series of sessions for Athena Swan practitioners, coordinators and/or members of Self-Assessment Teams. It follows on from the successful Athena Swan Learning Showcase which took place in September. This session will focus on building a baseline understanding of common organisational gender frameworks, including an overview of theoretical frameworks as well as practical tools to support in auditing gender equality and developing interventions.

Raising Happiness in Challenging Times
 
What can we do to raise our happiness, especially in difficult times? And how do we raise future generations to thrive in an uncertain world and help make things better?

At this special online event, renowned author, educator, historian and commentator Sir Anthony Seldon will explore what it means to raise happiness and why mental wellbeing is so profoundly important. He will reflect on some of the major challenges we face and the actions we can take - both personally and collectively - to improve our wellbeing and raise happiness levels, even in tough times.

Parenting Out Loud: Normalising Equal Parenting at Oxford
 
On the heels of the University improving its paternity and partners leave entitlement, what else can we do at Oxford to encourage and normalise equal parenting?

The Equality and Diversity Unit is delighted to welcome Dr Holly Birkett, Co-Director of the Equal Parenting Project at the University of Birmingham, to present the latest research on fatherhood and parenting in the UK, and what Oxford can learn from it. She will be joined by a panel of advocates from across the University, who are all walking the walk of parenting loudly.

Albert C. Koong, MD, PhD, FACR, FASTRORadiotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer: New Clinical Applications and Emerging Preclinical Studies

Dr Albert C. Koong is the Division Head and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and holds the Olga Keith and Harry Carothers Wiess Distinguished University Chair. He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR) and a Fellow of ASTRO (FASTRO).  His clinical research interests are focused on the application of highly targeted radiotherapy techniques for gastrointestinal malignancies, particularly on the use of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)/stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for pancreatic and liver cancer.  His NIH/NCI funded laboratory studies the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in tumour growth and metastases.  His major laboratory research focus is to develop therapies that target signalling pathways regulated by the tumour microenvironment and to develop biomarkers that are predictive of clinical outcomes.

Daniel Wahl, MD, PhDMeasuring, understanding and targeting altered metabolism in brain cancer

Dr Wahl's research focuses on developing strategies to overcome treatment resistance in aggressive brain tumours. He has a particular interest in understanding and interrupting the links between altered metabolism and radiation resistance in glioblastoma.

Internal Funding Highlights
  • Knowledge Exchange Seed Fund 24-25 Open for Applications!
    Do you want to align your research with community needs, develop an impact project with a public sector partner or reach out to an unfamiliar commercial sector?  Awards of up to £5000 are available to support early-stage knowledge exchange activities with businesses, community and public sector organisations. Previous awards have been used to host joint workshops with new partners, bring-in external expertise to develop an impact strategy, and to kickstart new projects with existing partners.
    The fund will reopen in Hilary Term for another round of applications
    Deadline: Monday, 25 November
  • Nuffield Oxford Hospitals Fund
    Open to applications that will raise the standard of the hospital or hospitals concerned in order to assist the development and carrying on of the Oxford University Medical School. Deadline: Fri 31 Jan 2025.
  • Oxford Martin School Funding 2024/25
    The Oxford Martin School has opened its latest round of funding for 2024/25 and is inviting expressions of interest for high-risk, high-reward and solutions-focused research that could have a major impact on the wellbeing of current and future generations. Please read the full application guidelines and eligibility criteria prior to the development of a formal EoI and follow the suggested next steps within the document. Contact Jean-Charles Buffet, Research and Programmes Manager at the Oxford Martin School for further information.

  • Improving Equitable Access to Healthcare – Pump Priming
    To pump prime activity and build interdisciplinary collaborations to improve equitable access to healthcare. Open to all Oxford researchers, awards of £10K – £50K (applications for up to £100K will be considered).
