Head of Administration and Finance

We are seeking to recruit a Head of Administration and Finance for the Department of Oncology, University of Oxford, which is one of the larger departments in Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division employing over 300 staff and more than 120 graduate students with an overall annual turnover of almost £30 million. The aims of the Department include the development of multidisciplinary oncology research in Oxford, working closely with clinical colleagues in the adjacent Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to translate research into cutting edge clinical treatment for cancer patients. The department includes a large specialist CRUK/MRC Institute, a clinical trials unit, and also hosts several large multidisciplinary external awards.
The Head of Administration and Finance plays a pivotal role in supporting the Head of Department in the overall management of the department working closely with senior academic staff and those involved in strategic projects. The postholder is responsible for the effective and efficient day-to-day non-academic management and administration of the department, supporting its academic mission and enabling the statutory responsibilities of the Head of Department to be fulfilled.
The department has a strong central management structure with some major sections including Finance; Human Resources; Facilities Management, Health and Safety; Information Technology; Research Governance and Contracts; Student and Academic Administration.
The role offers an excellent opportunity for the postholder to demonstrate strong business and managerial ability. An essential requirement of this position is to lead the central management team, made up of key managers in the above areas, to ensure that the services supporting the department’s research and teaching are well run and achieve their full potential. The postholder will oversee all financial management, together with the Head of Department, and be expected to maximise opportunities to increase the department’s income and to ensure the successful business development of the department’s core scientific research facilities and infrastructure.
The postholder will be required to have outstanding interpersonal, presentational and organisational skills. He or she will need to command the respect of staff at all levels in the department and be able to work effectively with all members of the department and other stakeholders both within and external to the University.
Applicants will be required to upload a full curriculum vitae, supporting statement and details of three referees as part of the online application.
For an informal discussion about the position, please contact Dr Claire Shingler (tel: 01865 617059 or email: claire.shingler@oncology.ox.ac.uk/a>) in the first instance.
