The MSc in Applied Cancer Science at the University of Oxford’s Department of Oncology is designed to prepare students for a career in cancer science research. Pablo Lopez Ribelles was part of the first MSc Applied Cancer Science cohort in 2023-2024, attracted to the cutting-edge curriculum and wealth of networking opportunities available at Oxford. Pablo shares his experience of the MSc Applied Cancer Science programme and how it helped to fuel his career aspirations.
Can you tell us about your background?
I have always been fascinated by biology, which led me to pursue a double BSc in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Universitat Rovira i Virgili in my home country, Spain. During my undergraduate studies, I developed a deep interest in one of the most complex and intriguing biological challenges - cancer. This interest became both personal and academic, and was further fuelled by my participation in several research and outreach programmes by the Spanish Association Against Cancer.
How did you hear about the MSc in Applied Cancer Science course and what made you decide to apply?
My desire to learn more about cancer biology brought me to participate in an academic exchange programme in the UK. Once here, I had the opportunity to learn about this novel programme at the University of Oxford. What convinced me to apply was its revolutionary focus on the translation of fundamental science into real-world products and technologies. I was particularly inspired by the programme's aim to bridge the gap between fundamental research and clinical or industrial innovation - a paradigm shift that I deem critical in today’s research.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
Beyond the wealth of learning resources, what I enjoyed the most was the opportunity to engage with world-leading experts in lectures, seminars, and tutorials, as well as through informal discussions. One of the most inspiring aspects of being in Oxford is having access to an immense pool of talent and intellectual curiosity. I find it very stimulating how passionate academic conversations can flourish almost everywhere here.
What were your next career steps after completing the MSc in Applied Cancer Science?
I’m thrilled to have now started an industrial DPhil in Advanced Bioscience of Viral Products under the supervision of Omer Dushek and Anton van der Merwe at the Dunn School of Pathology (University of Oxford) and in collaboration with the biotech company Oxford Biomedica. I will be working on the development of viral vectors for CAR T-cell therapies, a field that, I believe, holds great promise in advancing cancer treatment.
How has the MSc in Applied Cancer Science helped you to achieve your career goals?
The MSc has provided me with a solid understanding of the biological underpinnings of cancer while also giving me a clear vision of the different paths that lead scientific discoveries into real-world cancer therapies that make a difference in the clinic. The diverse skills that I have acquired are invaluable for my current DPhil work in collaboration with industry. Moreover, the networking opportunities and guidance from experts have opened doors that are directly shaping my career path.
Would you recommend the course?
Absolutely! The MSc in Applied Cancer Science offers a well-rounded education that not only deepens your knowledge of cancer biology, but also prepares you to tackle challenges in both academia and industry and helps you see the broader applications of your work. Although the course is undoubtedly intense, the opportunity to learn from world-leading experts and meet like-minded individuals is simply unparalleled.
What is your top tip for students wanting to study here?
Be proactive and make the most of the resources and opportunities available. Engage with faculty and peers, participate in your college activities and make the most out of the Oxford experience. Also, be open to exploring areas outside your immediate expertise - collaboration and curiosity are key to thriving in this multidisciplinary field.
