Taking up a place in the UNIQ summer school programme gives students the opportunity to be with others who also enjoy their studies. Together students spend their days with Oxford researchers exploring their favourite subject. The benefits do not stop there: students get to meet staff at the University and Colleges and experience student life in Oxford - even living in student accommodation.
Members from the Department spent 4 days with 30 students from across the UK and explored the nature of cancer; discussing the characteristic behaviour of cancer cells and the internal mechanisms that lead to malignancy. As well as exploring modern biochemical lab techniques and discussing the potential for future medicine to use imaging to personalise treatment. We looked at developments in our understanding of the immune system and the process of cancer spread. Investigated radiotherapy and looked into clinical trials design.
The visiting students were amazing; they were bright, enthusiastic and curious.
The summer school was an intense week with the students tackling subjects from cell biology, to metastasis; from radiotherapy to PCR techniques. The week also placed an intense demand for tutors with expertise that the students can learn from. The Department would like to take this chance to personally thank each of the tutors who made a contribution to this year's school:
- Marcus Green (Pathology)
- Sybyl Bertrand (Cancer Biology and tutorial)
- Jess Prince (Cell biology and practical techniques)
- Jess Buck (practical techniques and imaging)
- Luana Campos Soares (practical techniques and tutorial)
- Linda van Bijsterveldt (practical techniques)
- Shauna Beedie (practical techniques)
- Serena Lucotti (Metastasis)
- Carol Leung (Immunotherapy)
- Alexandr Khrapichev (tutorial)
- Ana Miar Cuervo (tutorial)
- Abul Azad (tutorial)
- Ruth Knight (Trials)
- Leena Elhussein (Trials)
These amazing people made possible an amazing experience for a lovely group of young people.
