Learning Objectives
The MSc in Applied Cancer Science is a one-year course designed to develop cancer research scientists of the future. It is offered by the Department of Oncology, with collaboration across Oxford’s cancer research community, which is drawn together under the umbrella of Oxford Cancer.
Learning objectives
A high-quality understanding of fundamental cancer science is the bedrock of future cancer innovations. In this course, we will harness Oxford’s expertise in the science of cancer, expanding on topics covered in undergraduate courses to explore the mechanisms of cancer at Master's level.
On completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Critically analyse the importance of understanding the DNA damage repair response for cancer research and treatment
- Evaluate how in-depth knowledge of tumour characteristics can be utilised in targeting cancer therapy
- Critically discuss the application of principles of immunology when studying and developing treatments for cancer
- Conduct, and explain the principles behind, essential experimental techniques required in modern cancer science
- Demonstrate originality in the application of existing knowledge and established techniques to create and interpret new developments in cancer science
- Critically discuss the challenges of translating new discoveries in therapeutics for clinical use
- Apply the scientific method to address research questions within the field of cancer science
Students will also demonstrate the transferable skills of:
- Critical assessment, including sourcing, appraisal, and evaluation of published material
- Scientific writing, including the development of reasoned and well-supported arguments
- Data handling and interpretation, including use of statistical methods
- Use of information technology to support scientific research and the production of academic reports
- Time and resource management
- Familiarity with laboratory safety and health and safety at work
- Written and oral communication and presentation skills
