Sample Collection for The Integration and Analysis of Data Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve Patient Outcomes with Thoracic Diseases

Study Design

Several areas in England are running Lung Health Check Screening. Patients are invited to attend a local scan appointment to check for signs of lung cancer.

This study asks patients who have something detected on their scan pictures to provide a small blood sample (30ml, or 1 tablespoon). The blood will be processed and information about proteins found in the blood will be used in our research.

We want to use the information we gather about the blood proteins to help improve lung cancer diagnosis.

  • We hope that it will be able to make a more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer, maybe even which type of cancer and what treatment might work best.
  • We also hope that it will be able to do this quickly, possibly even being done in a local surgery or GP practice, instead of having to attend a hospital appointment or undergoing surgical procedures.
  • Lastly, we hope that the results of this study could help us to find lung cancer earlier because we know that the earlier the cancer is detected, the more successful we can be at treating it.

The results of this study will also be paired with the results from the DART Project to develop predictive tools for assisting with diagnosing lung cancer. See more about the DART Project here:  https://dartlunghealth.co.uk/

Study Population

Patients aged 55-74 who are current smokers or ex-smokers could be invited to an NHS England Lung Health Check appointment.

If they have had a CT scan and something was detected, they might be eligible to participate in the SCOOT study.

Speak to your local clinical team for more details.
