This article presents the decisions concerning leukocyte antigens made by the nomenclature committee of the World Health Organisation which met after the eighth international workshop on histocompatibility. The reader's attention is drawn in particular to new designations of the provisional specificities HLA-B and HLA-DRW as well as to the position in the definitive classification of some of the HLA-D and HLA-DR antigens. It has been confirmed that there are 'supertypical' specificities which can give rise to cross-reactions.
