Sandeep Unwith

DPhil Student

Breast Cancer Metabolism

Background and Research Summary

Sandeep completed his undergraduate studies in Pharmacology and Business Management from Imperial College London 2015. Here he learnt about the field of hypoxia and cancer whilst undertaking his tutored dissertation: titled the role of Hypoxia Inducible Factors in Cancer metastasis, whilst also undertaking work experience in the lab of Sir Professor Peter Ratcliffe. Immediately after his degree he worked in finance and investments for 2 years, working with the social enterprise investment fund to invest into underserved communities and causes in the UK, before joining Oxford on an NDM Prize Studentship

Research Summary

Sandeep chose to undertake his DPhil with Professor Adrian Harris to focus on the role of hypoxia in tumour biology, in particular cancer metabolism, to learn more about wet lab techniques and approaches to basic biology discoveries. Later on Sandeep began training in machine learning and big data in order to transition to become a hybrid wet-lab and dry-lab scientist.

Research Goals

Sandeep's goal is to support the development of novel technologies, and policies, that can generate new ways of research, greater collaboration and coordination of research activities, and different strategies for therapeutic development.
