On 10 October, the Department of Oncology celebrated World Mental Health Day by hosting a range of relaxing activities to promote better awareness of mental health and wellness.

These events were designed to promote mental well-being within our department. The day was a resounding success, filled with activities that fostered a sense of community and underscored the importance of mental health.

We kicked things off with a department breakfast, providing an opportunity for colleagues to connect, share experiences, and enjoy a relaxed start to the day. The warm and supportive atmosphere set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Following breakfast, we held a refreshing yoga session. The calm atmosphere and expert guidance provided a much-needed break from our busy schedules, helping to centre our minds and bodies. Yoga is a powerful tool for managing stress and enhancing mental clarity, and it was wonderful to see so many participants embracing this practice.

Our crafting session was another highlight of the day. Engaging in creative activities can be incredibly therapeutic, allowing you to focus on creating something with your hands while unwinding. The room was filled with creativity as people knitted and crocheted with yarns of all colours. A group of colleagues are gathered around a table. The table has plants, pots and compost on it.

The house planting session was a big hit, as participants enjoyed potting plants to take home. Gardening and plant care have been shown to reduce stress and improve mood, making this activity a perfect fit for our mental health day. The enthusiasm people brought was a testament to how much everyone enjoyed getting a bit of nature into their lives.

Overall, the day was a resounding success and an essential reminder of the importance of looking after our mental health. In the fast-paced environment of oncology, it is crucial to take moments to pause, connect, and care for ourselves and each other. Yesterday’s events provided a welcome break from our routine and reinforced the value of mental well-being in our personal and professional lives.

We want to express our gratitude to everyone who took part and contributed to making the day so special. Mental health and wellness are important all year round, and it was a pleasure to take the opportunity to emphasise this.
