About the course
Delivered by the Department of Oncology in collaboration with the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the course brings together internationally recognised researchers, practising clinical scientists, and clinicians. You'll learn how physics and biology combine to drive advances in medical imaging, radiotherapy and radiation protection, while gaining first-hand experience of research.
A distinctive feature of the course is its integration of radiobiology with medical physics, giving you a deeper understanding of the biological principles that underpin advances in cancer diagnosis, radiotherapy, and precision medicine. This multidisciplinary approach equips graduates to contribute across the full spectrum of research, technology development and clinical innovation.
Accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), this unique programme is ideal for graduates seeking careers in medical physics, clinical science, academic research, the medical technology sector, radiation protection, or further doctoral study.
Why choose this course:
Learn from leading researchers and practising clinical scientists at the number one university in the world for Medical and Health Sciences (THE Subject Rankings).
Study at the intersection of physics, biology and medicine, with teaching informed by the latest developments in cancer research and healthcare technology.
Gain hands-on research experience through an independent research project within a world-class research group, NHS clinical department, or industry collaborator.
Develop the practical, analytical and research skills sought by employers across healthcare, academia and industry.
Graduate from an IPEM-accredited programme that provides an excellent foundation for further professional training and research.By the end of the course, you'll have a strong understanding of the physics and biology underpinning modern medical imaging, radiotherapy and radiation protection, together with the ability to evaluate new technologies and apply scientific methods to solve real-world clinical and research challenges.
Alongside specialist scientific knowledge, you'll develop valuable transferable skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing, critical evaluation, communication and project management through taught modules and an extended independent research project. These skills ready graduates to work confidently across the boundaries of physics, biology and clinical practice, helping to shape the future of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Meet the team
Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology; and Head of Research and Education and Consultant Clinical Scientist in the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering at OUH NHS Foundation Trust.
Associate Medical Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of Oncology, advising researcher in MR Linac (imaging physics); and data management consultant (clinical trials, imaging data)
The course perfectly blended fundamental physics topics with radiobiological principles. The addition of radiobiology is pretty unique to this course and is essential in understanding many of the decisions made in medical physics, such as fractionation in radiotherapy, allowing for a deeper understanding of the subject.
